In a ruling that’s already sending shockwaves through the conservative base, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a major decision on Friday, upholding a federal law that disarms individuals subject to domestic violence restraining orders — a move critics say chips away at the core of the Second Amendment.
The decision wasn’t even close. The high court ruled 8-1 against the challenge, with Justice Clarence Thomas standing alone in dissent.
SCOTUS Blog summarized the decision this way: “The court holds that when an individual has been found by a court to pose a credible threat to the physical safety of another, that individual may be temporarily disarmed consistent with the Second Amendment.”

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, leaning on historical precedent to justify modern gun control. “Since the founding, our Nation’s firearm laws have included provisions preventing individuals who threaten physical harm to others from misusing firearms. As applied to the facts of this case, Section 922(g)(8) fits comfortably within this tradition,” Roberts declared.
