The suspect is described by police as a black male and remains at large. Officers have released a photo of the individual and are urging the public to assist in identifying him as the search intensifies.

Wasielewski, who frequently walks in the park, expressed disbelief that such a violent act could occur in a familiar public space.

“I walk around this park a lot, even at night,” Wasielewski told WJCL. “You just don’t expect something like this to happen here.”

The attack has sparked concern among Savannah residents who view Forsyth Park as a central and typically safe gathering place. The randomness and brutality of the assault have raised broader questions about public safety and crime prevention in city parks.

Savannah Police Chief Lenny B. Gunther emphasized that the department is devoting significant resources to solving the case and protecting the community.

“Our first priority is the well-being of the victim, and our detectives are working around the clock to determine exactly what happened,” said Gunther.

He acknowledged the disturbing nature of the attack while attempting to reassure residents that law enforcement is responding aggressively.

“While this was a disturbing incident, we want to reassure our community that we are actively investigating and have increased patrols in our parks out of an abundance of caution.”

Investigators believe there may be witnesses who unknowingly captured important evidence. Police are specifically asking anyone who was in the park that evening to come forward, especially those who may have been taking photos or recording video.

“We’re asking anyone who was in Forsyth Park last night, especially those who were taking photos or video, to please come forward,” Gunther said.

“Even a small detail may help us piece together what occurred. Our community is one of our strongest partners in keeping Savannah safe,” he said.

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson also weighed in, pledging full cooperation and resources to ensure the suspect is apprehended and justice is served.

“City leadership is working closely to ensure SPD has every resource needed, from personnel to technology, to bring resolution to this case swiftly,” Johnson said in a Facebook post. “We will continue to keep our community informed, and we thank everyone who has already stepped forward to assist.”

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or submit an anonymous tip through the Savannah Police Department mobile app.

As the investigation continues, residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Meanwhile, the community has rallied around Wasielewski, hoping for her recovery and demanding accountability for a crime that has left lasting physical and emotional scars.

This case remains under active investigation.
