A Shopping Trip Turns Into a Public Dispute
The disagreement began when Clarkson visited Art of Play and expressed interest in purchasing an expensive mechanical bird displayed inside the establishment.
Clarkson subsequently took her complaint to social media, comparing her experience to the treatment of Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman. In the film, Roberts portrays a woman who encounters condescending treatment while shopping at an upscale clothing store.
Her comparison suggested that she felt judged and dismissed by the shop’s staff.
The business, however, offered a different account. Its representatives maintained that the particular bird, known as Molly, was a distinctive display piece permanently attached inside the shop and was not available for immediate purchase. According to the store, Clarkson was offered alternative options.
The disagreement quickly became a public battle, with both sides disputing the circumstances surrounding the interaction.
Security footage obtained by journalist and podcaster Pablo Torre subsequently showed Clarkson entering the shop, browsing merchandise, and examining items before speaking with an employee. She is later seen gesturing during another exchange near the entrance before leaving.
While the footage provides additional context, the absence of sound means viewers cannot determine precisely what was said or conclusively establish either side’s version of the conversation.
Nevertheless, the video has fueled further discussion about the incident and the singer’s decision to publicize her grievance.
Store Owner Says the Backlash Has Become Frightening
Rubin says the consequences have extended far beyond criticism of the store’s customer service.

In an interview with TMZ, he described an overwhelming wave of hostility that he believes followed Clarkson’s widely viewed social media posts.
“We are legitimately worried about the safety of our shopkeepers because Kelly Clarkson has put us all in danger at this point,” he said.
Rubin argued that the singer’s enormous audience created a serious imbalance between a globally recognized entertainer and a small neighborhood business with limited resources to respond to a sudden online storm.
Clarkson is “using your platform to try to squash us like a bug,” he said.
The owner also described the volume of hostile communications the business has allegedly received.
“Not just that, we’re getting review bombed, we’re getting attacked on social media, on our private social media accounts,” he said.
According to Rubin, the harassment has not been limited to the shop itself. People who have visited the business, along with friends and relatives who have spoken positively about it online, have reportedly become targets of angry responses.
“And the worst part of it is that our fans who have actually been here, our friends and our family would actually been in the store, anytime they post anything in support or any positivity or admiration for our shops, they’re getting attacked by Kelly Carson fans and getting threatened and getting — people telling our neighbor when he says something nice that they hope that his cat gets cancer. Doxing window. They’re doxxing a children’s art school next door.”
Rubin added that the business had not anticipated the scale of the reaction.
“We had no idea that any of this was going to happen, but Kelly Carson did,” he added.
The allegations raise broader concerns about what happens when an online dispute involving a celebrity draws an enormous audience toward a business that may have little ability to manage the resulting attention. Threats, targeted harassment, and the exposure of private information can have consequences that reach well beyond the original disagreement.
The Owner Pushes Back Against Celebrity Influence
Rubin has also challenged the idea that a celebrity should receive different treatment from an ordinary customer.
He described Art of Play as a place designed to welcome people regardless of their appearance, financial circumstances, or public profile.
“In the real world, where this shop exists, this is a place of magic and joy. We created this place to make people feel like kids again. Anyone that walks through the door, we invite them to sit down, pick things up and play with them. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to make a purchase. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing sweatpants, or they’re nine years old, or they’re a celebrity that we don’t recognize; they all get treated the same way,” one of the owners said in an interview, likening Clarkson’s attacks to a “f*cking Molotov cocktail” being thrown into the shop.
He suggested that the dispute stemmed from a disagreement over how the encounter unfolded, rather than an intentional effort to humiliate the singer.
“Kelly Clarkson’s problem is that she got to be treated like a normal person, and because of that, her ego was bruised, and she decided to throw a f*cking Molotov cocktail into our shop,” he said.
Those remarks reflect Rubin’s interpretation of the encounter, not an independently established explanation for Clarkson’s reaction. The singer’s own account of the interaction remains central to the dispute.
Still, the owner’s criticism highlights a difficult question for small businesses: How can a shop defend its reputation when a negative account from a famous customer reaches millions of people almost instantly?
An Unexpected Invitation Despite the Fallout
Despite his frustration, Rubin has indicated that he does not intend to retaliate against Clarkson or pursue legal action over the incident.
Instead, he extended an invitation for the singer to return to Art of Play and experience the store under different circumstances, including attending a magic show.
His offer came with a practical request: advance notice, given the attention that would likely accompany another visit.
Rubin acknowledged that the sudden publicity had created an exhausting environment for everyone involved, even as he expressed sympathy for the pressures associated with celebrity life.
“I’d like her to maybe let me know before she comes because it seems that a lot of attention follows her around. But I’ll tell you this: the last 72 hours have been so fcking intense. All of our phones are overheating. I’ve had cameras in my face since 11 o’clock this morning. If it’s this intense to be mentioned by Kelly Clarkson, imagine how intense it is to be Kelly Clarkson. So, I have a lot of sympathy for the pressure that she’s under, but the actions that she took, it’s a reprehensible abuse of power, it’s asymetrical social warfare, and society needs to take a look at itself when we give celebrities a pass to do sht like this,” he added
That statement captures the tension at the center of the controversy. Customers have every right to describe disappointing experiences, and public figures are not exempt from expressing dissatisfaction. But when a complaint reaches a massive audience, the resulting reaction can extend far beyond the original target.
For a neighborhood shop, the difference between an ordinary customer-service dispute and a viral controversy can be enormous.
A Bigger Question About Social Media Accountability
The dispute between Clarkson and Art of Play has become more than an argument over an unusual mechanical bird. It has developed into a debate about the responsibilities that accompany a large public platform.
A celebrity’s account can attract immediate attention, while a small business may struggle to make its own explanation heard. When online criticism turns into threats or harassment, employees, neighboring establishments, and ordinary customers can become unintended participants in a controversy they never initiated.
The surveillance video has added context, but its lack of audio leaves important questions unanswered. Neither the footage nor the competing accounts should be treated as definitive proof of every detail surrounding the encounter.
What is clear is that the dispute has generated significant attention and that the store’s owner says the consequences have been deeply disruptive.
Rubin’s willingness to leave the door open to reconciliation suggests that he hopes the confrontation will eventually end rather than continue escalating.
Whether Clarkson responds to the invitation remains to be seen. For now, the incident serves as a reminder that online outrage can carry real-world consequences—and that a disagreement inside a small shop can quickly become a much larger problem when amplified by celebrity attention.
