A Democratic congressional candidate in New York is facing questions over her position on immigration enforcement after defending a Dominican national with a criminal history who was wounded during a confrontation with federal agents.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee in New York’s 13th Congressional District and an outspoken supporter of socialist policies, argued during a CNN interview that deporting someone who has already faced criminal prosecution amounts to an additional punishment.
Her comments followed a federal immigration operation in Manhattan’s Marble Hill neighborhood that ended with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shooting Oscar Belgal, a Dominican national whom authorities have linked to a violent street gang.
