Smokey Bear’s Revenge Caught on Camera?

You just can’t make this stuff up.

In a bizarre—and hilariously fitting—twist of justice, a man accused of swiping Smokey Bear signs across the state of Florida found himself in handcuffs this week… with Smokey Bear himself on the scene.

Florida officials revealed that a suspect believed to be behind a string of thefts involving Smokey Bear signs was finally nabbed after allegedly stealing the iconic wildfire prevention signs from several state parks. His motive? To flip them for profit—on Facebook Marketplace.

That’s right. He was selling them online for $1,900 each. And yes, he really thought he’d get away with it.

But Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson was having none of it. Posting on social media Wednesday, Simpson taunted the accused thief, writing:
“What happens when dumb criminals poke the bear?”
He quickly followed with the answer:
“Our Ag Law Team has a suspect in custody who traveled from Pensacola to Orlando stealing Smoky Bear signs from our state forests and selling them on Facebook Marketplace for $1,900 each … Big thank you to Smokey Bear for personally assisting in the arrest.”
