In an attention-grabbing stunt that’s ignited outrage among many Americans, singer Vanessa Hernandez—known professionally as “Nezza”—chose to defy direct instructions from Dodgers officials and perform the U.S. National Anthem in Spanish, rather than English, during a pre-game ceremony at Dodger Stadium.

Draped in a Dominican Republic shirt, Hernandez uploaded a TikTok video showing the moment she was clearly told to stick to the traditional English rendition of the anthem. “We are going to do the song in English today,” a Dodgers official states in the clip. The video then cuts to Nezza brazenly ignoring the directive and performing the anthem in Spanish just before the Dodgers faced off against the San Francisco Giants.

The move appeared to be a deliberate show of solidarity with anti-ICE protestors, who have been aggressively rioting across Los Angeles since June 6 in opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions. Despite the clear instructions and the significance of the anthem, Hernandez made the decision to insert her own political agenda into a patriotic moment meant to unify the crowd.
In a follow-up TikTok, Hernandez tried to justify her defiance, claiming she was shocked to be told not to sing in Spanish. “I didn’t think I’d be met with any sort of no,” she said. “I just felt like I needed to do it. I’m still very shaken up and emotional.”
