With the debate just over a day away, CNN provided a live demonstration to illustrate how the microphone setup will function. During the demonstration, anchor Victor Blackwell explained that each podium would be equipped with green lights signaling when a candidate could speak. The demonstration highlighted the effectiveness of the system in preventing interruptions; while Blackwell spoke uninterrupted, his colleague’s attempts to interject were muffled and unclear.
“Our goal is to make it clear how the debate will be conducted,” CNN’s Phil Mattingly said during the demonstration. “By sharing this with the public and having the agreement of both campaigns, we ensure that everyone understands and respects the rules set for tomorrow night.”
The upcoming debate is just the first of possibly several between Trump and Biden as the November elections draw near. The next debate is scheduled to be held by ABC News on September 10. While Trump has agreed to participate in two additional debates, including one hosted by Telemundo, the Biden campaign has not confirmed participation beyond the initial commitments.
