In response to legal challenges, Abbott chose to tackle the problem differently by arresting those who enter the state illegally, in accordance with federal immigration law. Yet, he faces opposition from immigration advocacy groups, mainstream media, and Democrats at the federal level.
Critics argue that enforcing the law creates a climate of fear in Texas. However, like any other law, if individuals are suspected of breaking it, they may be questioned by law enforcement.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador condemned Texas’ law as “draconian” and “anti-Christian.” His criticism, citing an alleged overreach of federal authority, seems hypocritical given Mexico’s struggles with drug cartel control.
Obrador’s comparison of the Texas law to a hypothetical scenario in Mexico is flawed. Texas’ law addresses illegal entry into the state, not legal passage through it. Moreover, under Mexican law, illegal entry by Americans is also prohibited.
It remains puzzling why Mexico’s president opposes US efforts to secure its border, given Mexico’s own laws against illegal entry.
