According to von der Leyen, European nations are drawing up “pretty precise plans” to deploy troops into Ukraine under a future “peace” framework. And she flat-out insisted Trump supported it.
“President Trump reassured us that there will be [an] American presence as part of the backstop,” von der Leyen told the Financial Times. She doubled down, saying, “That was very clear and repeatedly affirmed.”
Yes—you read that right. While standing in arms factories, she tried to convince the world that Trump had signed off on her scheme.
Trump’s actual words
Trump did recently host European leaders at the White House, where he said, “We’re willing to help, especially from the air – because no one has what we have.”
But that’s a far cry from endorsing von der Leyen’s plan to escalate boots-on-the-ground involvement. And the timing of her remarks—while parading around munitions plants in Estonia, Poland, and Bulgaria—made the whole thing look like a staged show of force.
Germany blows up her narrative
Then came the humiliation. Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius swiftly dismantled her claims during his own factory visit near Cologne.
“Those are things that you don’t discuss before you sit down at the negotiating table with many parties that have a say in the matter,” Pistorius said.
Translation: von der Leyen was way out of line.
And he didn’t stop there. Pistorius added, “I would know better than to comment or confirm such considerations in any way, apart from the fact that the European Union has no mandate or competency whatsoever when it comes to positioning troops.”
In plain English—she doesn’t even have the authority to make those decisions. Her whole charade collapsed in real time.
The real motive behind the stunt
So why did she do it? Simple. European elites see Trump returning to the White House with a promise to end the Ukraine conflict, not deepen it.
