She Called Christians the Biggest Threat — Then DHS Answered!

The controversy also raises an important distinction: Williams’ criticism of Christian nationalism is not necessarily a condemnation of Christianity itself, although critics argue that her rhetoric risks alienating religious Americans.

Williams Takes Aim at Christian Nationalism During Concert

Williams reportedly addressed Christian nationalism while introducing “True Believer,” a track from her 2025 solo album.

The remarks sparked criticism from those who believe the singer’s characterization overlooked Christianity’s historical influence on American political thought and institutions.

Lisa Cusack, president of the Don’t L.A. My Burbank PAC, challenged Williams’ comments in remarks attributed to her by Fox News.

“Incredibly ignorant comment considering Christianity is woven into the fabric of every founding document that proscribes Americans’ democratic rights,” Cusack told Fox.

Cusack went further, arguing that Christian philosophical traditions helped shape the American understanding of individual liberty and rights.

“There would be no Natural Law without Christianity, and without that, no human rights that exist beyond a government’s power,” Cusack said. “Democracy has thrived in the Christian nations across the world for a reason. The true threat is this kind of ignorant bigotry.”

The disagreement reflects a broader national debate about the relationship between religious belief and government authority.

Christian nationalism generally refers to political movements seeking a privileged role for Christianity in national identity or public institutions. The term does not encompass all Christians, and its meaning varies among speakers.

For Williams’ critics, however, the controversy centers on whether such rhetoric draws that distinction clearly enough.

DHS Responds After Williams Targets ICE

The dispute intensified when Williams reportedly shouted “F— ICE” during a New Hampshire performance and followed it with “FREE MOTHERF—— PALESTINE.”

The remarks placed the singer among several prominent entertainers who have publicly criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

DHS responded with a statement defending the federal officers responsible for carrying out immigration enforcement.

“America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe,” a department spokesperson said. “We suggest Ms. Williams to thank them for their service, not belittle their sacrifice.”

The response highlighted the widening divide between immigration enforcement officials and celebrities who oppose the administration’s approach.

ICE officers are responsible for enforcing federal immigration laws, including investigating immigration-related offenses and carrying out arrests and removals.

Supporters of the agency emphasize its work targeting dangerous offenders and maintaining public safety. Critics question particular enforcement tactics, detention practices, and the treatment of immigrant communities.

Williams’ remarks offered a forceful expression of opposition, while DHS used the moment to publicly defend its personnel.

Williams Escalates the Feud With an Instagram Attack

Rather than backing away from the confrontation, Williams reportedly responded to DHS on October 5 with an explicit Instagram Story.

According to Stereogum and The Independent, she shared the department’s statement alongside another profanity-filled insult directed at people she described as Nazis.

The response made clear that the singer had no intention of moderating her public criticism of immigration enforcement.

The exchange also generated attention because DHS has recently warned about threats and violence targeting its personnel.

The department reported 647 assaults against ICE personnel between January 20, 2025, and September 20, 2026, compared with 37 during the corresponding period in 2021 and 2022.

Those figures are DHS-reported totals, and the comparison alone does not establish that celebrity statements caused attacks against officers.

A History of Political Confrontations

Williams’ latest controversy follows years of outspoken political commentary.

During a 2023 Paramore concert in Atlantic City, she declared that supporters of then-Florida Governor Ron DeSantis were effectively finished in her eyes.

At the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival, Williams also criticized Donald Trump and Project 2025, warning that she believed the conservative policy agenda threatened several groups of Americans.

Those comments established a pattern of political messaging that has continued into her solo career.

Her 2026 tour has featured criticism of ICE, support for Palestinians, and warnings about Christian nationalism.

The remarks have attracted both criticism and support, with some fans welcoming her activism and others questioning the increasingly political nature of her performances.

A Debate Bigger Than One Rock Star

The controversy illustrates how quickly entertainment, religion, and federal policy can collide.

Williams has every right to criticize government agencies and express her political convictions. Likewise, federal officials and members of the public can challenge her arguments.

But the distinction between criticizing Christian nationalism and condemning Christianity remains central to understanding the dispute.

For Americans who see Christianity as an important influence on the nation’s founding principles, the singer’s rhetoric has raised questions about how religious Americans are portrayed in popular culture.

For those who share Williams’ concerns, her statements represent opposition to the political use of religious identity rather than hostility toward individual believers.

Meanwhile, DHS has chosen to defend its officers publicly rather than ignore criticism from one of rock music’s most recognizable performers.

The result is a cultural confrontation that extends well beyond a concert stage.

Williams has demonstrated that she intends to continue speaking about politics during her performances, while DHS has shown that it is willing to answer prominent critics directly.

And with both sides refusing to retreat, the dispute over religion, immigration enforcement, and political expression appears unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
