Anthony Guglielmi, spokesperson for the Secret Service, confirmed the agency’s involvement. “Members of our uniformed division were looking into a suspicious vehicle,” he told CBS News.
“Various entrances and the streets are temporarily closed as teams conduct their work,” Guglielmi added, stressing that updates would be provided once officers finished their initial review.
Local media outlets, including WJLA-TV, reported multiple street closures around the White House as law enforcement secured the area.
The event comes amid heightened security concerns. Last month, police fatally shot an armed man who attempted to enter President Donald Trump’s Florida residence carrying a shotgun. In another separate incident, a man with a shotgun was arrested after trying to rush into the U.S. Capitol.
Security measures have also intensified internationally. Following the escalation of tensions with Iran last month, the Secret Service announced extra protective steps.
“The US Secret Service is actively monitoring the situation in Iran and remains in close coordination with our federal and local partners. The agency’s protective model is designed to be adaptable to meet the needs of the current security environment and ensure the continued safety of our protectees, protective sites, and the surrounding communities,” the agency said in a news release.
The Secret Service also reminded the public that operational security measures are not fully disclosed. “While we do not discuss our specific protective measures for operational security reasons, the public may notice an increased law enforcement and federal presence around U.S. Secret Service protected sites,” the statement read.
This latest breach underscores the ongoing threats facing national security and the ever-present vigilance required to protect the president and other high-profile sites.
