The announcement blindsided the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. Trump’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy didn’t even give them time to react before firing off a federal Request for Information inviting private developers to propose entirely new terminals and concourses.
DOT officials did not hold back, stating the airport had “fallen into a state of disrepair” and was “no longer an airport suitable and grand enough for the capital of the United States of America.”
Duffy doubled down, citing chronic failures that travelers have complained about for decades, from crumbling concourses to fuel-soaked hallways and ridiculous half-mile hikes to outdated gates.
A Secret Trump Inspection And A Crash That Changed Everything
It turns out Trump had already taken an unannounced motorcade to Dulles weeks earlier. What he saw apparently convinced him the airport’s future could not continue on its current path.
Then disaster struck.
A November 10 collision involving one of the airport’s bizarre “mobile lounges,” the tank-like shuttles that have hauled passengers since 1962, sent 18 people to the hospital. The vehicle smashed into its docking station at an angle, forcing passengers to escape down stairways.
Duffy made it clear this incident was the final straw for the administration.
“We had a crash recently,” he said. “We’re going to announce later today the request for bids on this. But again, it’s not a great airport, which we can make great in this administration.”
Trump’s nominee for the airport authority board vowed to phase the shuttles out entirely, calling them relics from a bygone era. Even Senator Ted Cruz previously blasted them as “glacial” and “tank-like.”
Biden Let FAA Systems Rot While Trump Now Modernizes Them
The Dulles overhaul is only one piece of Trump’s massive effort to rebuild an aviation network Biden ignored.
Duffy revealed that the administration has accelerated the FAA’s transition away from copper-based infrastructure — a modernization Biden claimed would take over a decade.
“Many of you have heard that we have an infrastructure made of copper. We have to transition to fiber,” Duffy said. “The last administration said it was going to take more than 10 years to complete the transition from copper to fiber. They had no plan to actually do it.”
The Trump team has already converted one-third of the system.
Duffy vowed to purchase new digital radios and radar systems, noting that much of the world updated theirs 20 years ago. Under Biden, controllers were still relying on outdated analog gear so primitive it required floppy disks and vintage wiring.
A GAO review last year confirmed that more than one-third of FAA systems were essentially unsustainable.
Trump Fixes What Biden Ignored
Dulles serves over 27 million travelers a year and remains the primary international gateway to America’s capital. Yet guests, diplomats, and business leaders have been forced to slog through fuel-smelling corridors and ride 60 year old vehicles that look like props from a 1960s sci-fi film.
Trump is doing what Biden never did — rebuilding key infrastructure instead of throwing money at press releases.
And Washington officials are furious someone finally said the quiet part out loud.
