Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) found himself the butt of laughter this week after a bizarre moment on the Senate floor where he accused the New York Times of tilting against Democrats.
The embarrassing scene unfolded just before the government officially shut down, with Schumer insisting that a widely cited poll showing Americans blame Democrats for the impasse couldn’t be trusted. The entire Republican side of the chamber erupted into laughter at his comments.
Schumer Attacks the New York Times
Schumer tried to brush off a damning New York Times/Siena poll that showed Democrats taking the lion’s share of the blame for the looming shutdown.
“Now I know the leader is going to show a poll that says that Democrats will be blamed for the shutdown,” Schumer said. “There are many more polls that show Republicans are blamed. The question in that poll is biased.”
