Thom Tillis is facing fierce backlash from conservatives after unloading on President Donald Trump and a newly established Justice Department fund meant to compensate Americans targeted during the Biden-era lawfare campaign against Trump supporters and political dissidents.
The North Carolina Republican erupted this week over the Trump-backed anti-weaponization fund, calling it “stupid on stilts” and denouncing the idea of compensating January 6 defendants and others he claims assaulted police officers during the Capitol unrest.
The controversy exploded after details emerged that the fund was created as part of a broader agreement connected to Trump’s legal battles with the federal government. Trump recently dropped more than $10 billion in legal claims tied to the leaking of his tax returns and what supporters have long described as the political weaponization of the Justice Department against him and his allies.
Speaking to reporters Monday, Trump defended the initiative and made clear that the goal is to help Americans financially ruined by politically motivated prosecutions.
“They’ve been weaponized, they’ve been, in some cases, imprisoned wrongly. They paid legal fees that they didn’t have. They’ve gone bankrupt, their lives have been destroyed, and they turn out to be right,” the President said.
