A familiar obstacle is once again standing in President Donald Trump’s way, and this time it involves the powerful Federal Reserve. A Republican senator is openly vowing to block any future nominee to lead the central bank if Trump moves to replace current Chairman Jerome Powell. The threat is already igniting a fierce political and economic battle inside Washington.
Sen. Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, announced he will oppose any Federal Reserve nominee under the current circumstances. His remarks came after reports that Jerome Powell is facing a criminal investigation tied to past testimony about renovations at the Federal Reserve’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Tillis took to social media to justify his position, signaling deep concern over what he views as an attack on the Fed’s independence.
“If there were any remaining doubt whether advisors within the Trump Administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none,” Tillis said on X.
“It is now the independence and credibility of the Department of Justice that are in question.”
