In a stunning act of defiance, outgoing Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell cast the lone Republican vote against one of President Donald Trump’s key national security nominees—igniting fierce backlash from Vice President J.D. Vance, who didn’t hold back.
McConnell, who has long been out of step with the MAGA movement and grassroots conservatives, voted to block the confirmation of Elbridge Colby for the position of Under Secretary of Defense for Policy—effectively the third most powerful civilian role in the Pentagon. The move stunned political observers, especially since Colby is widely respected among national defense experts and had strong support from nearly every other Republican in the Senate.
