A recent survey by the John Locke Foundation shows that former President Donald Trump continues to have tremendous support from North Carolina’s probable Republican voters as the 2024 state primaries approach. He stands out as the group of people polled’s clear favorite.
According to the most recent poll, Donald Trump would receive a commanding majority of the votes if the presidential primary were held today.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis placed second in this race with a sizable 22% of the vote. Mike Pence, a former vice president, and Nikki Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, came in second and third, with 8% and 5%, respectively.
A recent poll showed that the incumbent president is performing unexpectedly well with younger primary voters and those over 65, despite Trump’s polarizing influence on more mature voting blocs. Trump has an outstanding 60% support from voters in both age groups, which is much greater than support from groups in between.

Voters in North Carolina have yet to decide who they would support in important races, despite the March primary drawing near. The survey indicates a lead for Trump and DeSantis, but there is still time for other candidates to provide a strong case before election day.
Recent presidential elections, particularly the 2016 US Presidential Election, have focused heavily on North Carolina. Republicans defeated Democrats in this contest, with President Trump receiving 49.8% of the vote to Hillary Clinton’s 46.2%.
In the 2020 election, North Carolina was a crucial battleground state, where President Trump defeated former Vice President Biden by a slim margin of 1.3%. Despite winning 48.6% of the total votes cast in the state, Biden was unable to defeat Trump’s 49.9%, turning NC firmly red on the electoral map this past year.
Tight contests have a long history in North Carolina, with the results in 2008 and 2012 being especially close. In 2008, Barack Obama defeated rival John McCain by the slimmest of margins (0.3%), while Mitt Romney won with a little greater margin (2%), four years later.

The state of North Carolina is on the verge of a significant political shift. With its current Democratic governor, it is all the more intriguing. Its population is expanding quickly and becoming more diverse, which is causing an unanticipated shift in voting demographics that might make this usually Republican bastion much more competitive by the 2024 presidential election.
