House Republicans are escalating pressure on California Governor Gavin Newsom, launching a far-reaching investigation into what they describe as a deeply compromised hospice care system riddled with fraud, abuse, and regulatory failure. The probe, led by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, signals a major political and legal showdown as lawmakers demand answers from one of the nation’s most powerful Democratic governors.
In a sharply worded letter sent Monday, investigators outlined what they say is a pattern of negligence and inaction by California officials, despite years of mounting warnings. The letter, addressed directly to Newsom, accuses state leadership of allowing a broken system to spiral out of control while vulnerable patients and taxpayer dollars were put at risk.
At the heart of the controversy is what lawmakers call a “well-documented history” of fraud within California’s hospice programs, many of which rely heavily on federal Medicare funding. According to the committee, red flags have been visible for years, yet meaningful reforms never materialized. Instead, the system appears to have expanded rapidly without adequate safeguards.
One of the most shocking revelations involves the sheer explosion of hospice providers, particularly in Los Angeles County. Since 2010, the number of providers has ballooned by approximately 1,500 percent, with more than 2,800 now operating statewide. That figure dwarfs national norms and even exceeds the total provider count in multiple states combined.
