As election season heats up, so do the infamous “October Surprises.” These political bombs are often dropped just before key elections, intended to sway voters or sabotage a campaign. Historically, they’ve fallen into two categories: those that land a direct hit and those so exaggerated that they crumble under scrutiny. Unfortunately, former President Donald Trump finds himself at the center of one of these so-called surprises yet again, and this one appears to fall into the latter category.

Earlier this week, a report by The Atlantic aimed a new attack at the Republican presidential nominee, attributing shocking quotes to Trump. The most explosive claim? That Trump allegedly said, “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had.”
