In a significant boost for the Republican Party, Nick Begich has triumphed over incumbent Democrat Mary Peltola to claim Alaska’s at-large congressional district. This hard-fought win increases the GOP’s hold in the U.S. House of Representatives to 220 seats, further solidifying their majority beyond the 218 required threshold.
Peltola, who made history in 2022 by flipping the seat previously held by Republican stalwart Don Young for nearly five decades, faced a grueling re-election campaign. Her earlier success had hinged on Alaska’s newly implemented ranked-choice voting system, which enabled her to edge out prominent Republican Sarah Palin in a fiercely contested runoff. However, this time, the Republicans rallied behind Begich, who narrowly unseated her by less than 10,000 votes.

Alaska’s election dynamics were shaped by a united Republican front. In the state’s top-four, nonpartisan primary, Begich and fellow Republican Nancy Dahlstrom both advanced alongside Peltola.
