Protester Shot After Ignoring Family Warnings

Minneapolis erupted in chaos Saturday morning after federal law enforcement shot a 37-year-old man during a tense confrontation. Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs hospital, was killed after approaching U.S. Border Patrol agents while armed.

Pretti’s parents, who live in Wisconsin, said they had urged him to stay safe. “We had this discussion with him two weeks ago or so, you know, that go ahead and protest, but do not engage, do not do anything stupid, basically,” his father, Michael Pretti, told the Associated Press. “And he said he knows that. He knew that.”

The incident came a day after a massive demonstration in downtown Minneapolis, where tens of thousands rallied against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. Federal officials said Pretti approached officers with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and resisted repeated orders to back down.

“He cared about people deeply and he was very upset with what was happening in Minneapolis and throughout the United States with ICE, as millions of other people are upset,” Michael Pretti said. “He felt that doing the protesting was a way to express that, you know, his care for others.”
