Federal investigators have reportedly launched a criminal probe into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, sending shockwaves through Washington and raising serious questions about accountability at one of the most powerful institutions in the country.
At the center of the controversy is the staggering cost of renovating the Federal Reserve’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. What began as a $1.9 billion construction project has now ballooned to an eye-popping $2.5 billion—an increase that lawmakers say demands answers, transparency, and potentially criminal scrutiny.
The renovation of the Fed’s historic Eccles Building has been simmering under the surface for months, but tensions escalated after reports revealed what critics described as excessive and unnecessary upgrades. Powell, already under pressure from inflation concerns and interest rate policies that have hammered working Americans, now finds himself facing questions that go far beyond monetary policy.
According to CNN, Powell attempted to get ahead of the controversy by requesting internal oversight. “Powell has asked the central bank’s inspector general to conduct an additional review of the ongoing renovation, CNN previously reported.
