Pope Names Far-Left Activist Cardinal!

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

Critics point out McElroy’s tendency to push against traditional Catholic priorities. He has argued that abortion, while important, is not the sole issue deserving attention within Catholic moral teaching. This stance has frustrated conservatives who prioritize anti-abortion efforts above all else.

In 2021, as other Catholic bishops moved to bar politicians like President Joe Biden from receiving communion due to their support for abortion rights, McElroy opposed the move. He warned that such actions would turn the Eucharist into “a sign of division” rather than unity.

Radical Inclusion Sparks Debate

McElroy’s advocacy for “radical inclusion” of women and LGBTQ individuals has further widened the rift between traditionalists and progressives in the church. His efforts to promote these groups into leadership positions are seen by many conservatives as a departure from longstanding church practices. His rise to prominence under Pope Francis, who made him a cardinal in 2022, solidified his reputation as a liberal force within the church hierarchy.

Defiance Against Mass Deportations

McElroy has also taken strong stands on political issues, including immigration policy. He previously labeled Donald Trump’s mass deportation proposals as “unthinkable” and has promised to support vulnerable communities in the face of these challenges. In a statement, he reassured migrant families:

“We realize that the calls for mass deportations and raids on undocumented individuals and migrant families have created genuine fear for so many we shepherd in our dioceses. Rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the sacred dignity of every person, we commit to accompanying and walking in solidarity with you, our migrant brothers, sisters, and families through this uncertain time. We will shepherd you spiritually, gather information and resources, and continue to advocate for your dignity and family unity.”

A Message to Traditionalists

This appointment is seen by some as a rebuke to the more traditional wing of the Catholic Church, including figures like J.D. Vance, a prominent conservative who converted to Catholicism in 2018. Vance and others in the traditionalist camp have advocated for maintaining the church’s historical teachings and priorities.

While McElroy’s role as archbishop does not grant him political authority, his leadership position in Washington provides a platform to influence the Catholic Church’s direction in the U.S. Furthermore, as a cardinal, he will have the power to vote in the selection of the next pope, raising the likelihood of another progressive leader succeeding Pope Francis.

Conservative Backlash Brewing

For many conservatives, McElroy’s promotion signifies a troubling shift in the Catholic Church’s leadership. His support for progressive causes, combined with his history of challenging conservative priorities, raises questions about the future of Catholicism under Pope Francis’ vision.

As Cardinal McElroy steps into his new role, the division between traditionalists and progressives within the church is likely to deepen. His influence, particularly in shaping the next generation of Catholic leadership, ensures that his appointment will remain a contentious topic for years to come.
