Cardinal Cupich recently announced that Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) will be receiving the “Keep Hope Alive Lifetime Achievement Award” for his work on immigration. The announcement shocked Catholics across the country, considering Durbin’s decades-long support for abortion—so much so that he has been banned from receiving Communion in Springfield, Illinois since 2004.
Rather than condemning the scandal, the Vatican appeared to brush aside the outrage. At least ten U.S. bishops have already gone public with their objections, blasting Cupich’s decision as a betrayal of Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life.
