Hayes acknowledged that Piker’s presence could become a serious liability once Democrats move beyond the primary electorate and into a general election campaign.
According to the discussion, Hayes argued that it does not make “a ton of sense in a general election” to campaign alongside someone whose past statements have generated widespread controversy.
He also said Piker “is probably going to have to watch what he says a lot more” if he wants to play a useful role in helping Democrats win elections.
That portion of the conversation was then clipped and posted by Crooked Media, the company behind Pod Save America.
The clip quickly attracted attention on X.
Then it disappeared.
A Clip Goes Viral — Then Vanishes
The deletion might have gone unnoticed had it not been spotted and amplified by Michael LaRosa, a former Biden administration communications official.
LaRosa served as press secretary to former first lady Jill Biden and has since become a vocal critic of the direction of the Democratic Party. He has also publicly supported Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race against Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
LaRosa had been sharing the clip because he viewed Hayes’ comments as an unusually candid acknowledgment of the political problems surrounding Piker.
When the video disappeared, LaRosa called attention to it.
“WOW,” LaRosa posted on X. “@PodSave America appears to have deleted the clip they themselves posted of @Chrislhayes and @alexwagner telling the truth about why Hasan Piker is a major liability and problem for El-Sayed.”
LaRosa followed up with another pointed observation.
“Apparently, their candor was refreshing right up until moderates like me started amplifying and celebrating it,” he said.
The episode was also noticed by gun-control activist Shannon Watts, who publicly questioned the deletion.
The timing only fueled speculation.
After 3 p.m. Monday, more than six hours after the original clip disappeared, Pod Save America posted a longer version of the exchange. The new video contained additional context surrounding the discussion.
That explanation did little to end the controversy.
LaRosa remained skeptical.
“Which means somebody from Piker’s camp or El-Sayed’s camp probably wined and cried and forced them to take down and recreate the content,” he responded. “Truly hysterical. But how embarrassing for ‘Pod Save America.'”
There is no public evidence establishing that Piker or El-Sayed personally demanded that the original clip be removed. The available evidence shows that the clip was deleted and later replaced with a longer version, while critics have speculated about the reason.
Crooked Media did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment, according to the original report.
Why Hasan Piker Has Become a Problem for Democrats
The controversy matters because Hasan Piker is no longer merely an online personality operating outside traditional Democratic politics.
The streamer has developed a substantial audience among younger Americans and has become increasingly involved in Democratic political campaigns.
But Piker’s political record has also created serious headaches for Democrats attempting to appeal to voters beyond the party’s activist base.
In 2019, Piker made the notorious statement that “America deserved 9/11” during a livestream while discussing U.S. foreign policy. Piker later described the remarks as poorly worded and argued that he was criticizing American foreign policy rather than endorsing terrorism.
His comments about Mao Zedong have also generated controversy. Piker has praised Mao as “one of the great leaders of this world,” a statement that resurfaced amid criticism of his increasingly visible role in Democratic politics.
Those remarks are now colliding with the Democratic Party’s attempt to win voters in competitive states.
Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s association with Piker has become particularly contentious. El-Sayed campaigned with Piker during the Democratic primary, and Piker’s involvement became a major point of criticism from Democratic opponents.
Sen. John Fetterman has also publicly challenged El-Sayed over the relationship, warning that Republicans could use Piker’s past statements against the Democratic nominee in the general election.
That is precisely where the Pod Save America clip becomes politically significant.
The question is no longer simply whether Democrats like Hasan Piker.
The question is whether Democrats can afford to put him front and center when trying to win over voters who may know little about him — but could quickly become familiar with his most controversial statements through Republican campaign advertising.
Democrats Face an Uncomfortable Choice
The Piker controversy exposes a larger problem for Democrats.
The party increasingly relies on online personalities who can mobilize younger voters, dominate social media conversations and reach audiences traditional politicians struggle to reach.
But those same personalities often come with years of provocative statements that can become political ammunition during a general election.
That creates a difficult balancing act.
Democratic candidates may want the energy and reach that figures like Piker bring. At the same time, establishment Democrats know that an association with controversial online personalities can alienate voters in the political middle.
That tension appears to be exactly what Hayes was discussing.
The disappearance and subsequent reposting of the clip has therefore become a story of its own.
Critics see it as an example of Democrats becoming uncomfortable when internal criticism escapes the progressive bubble.
Defenders can point to the longer reposted video as evidence that the original clip simply lacked sufficient context.
