A disturbing wave of cyberattacks targeting supermarket refrigeration systems across Europe is raising serious questions about the vulnerability of America’s food supply chain, with investigators reportedly examining whether U.S. military facilities were targeted before the attacks spread overseas.
What happens when the technology designed to keep a nation’s food cold becomes a weapon capable of destroying it?
That unsettling scenario is reportedly unfolding across Europe, where hackers have allegedly manipulated internet-connected refrigeration systems at hundreds of supermarkets, transforming ordinary grocery store equipment into a serious security vulnerability.
According to the account of the incidents, the initial attack struck more than 700 supermarkets in France. Rather than deploying explosives, sabotaging buildings, or physically entering stores, the attackers allegedly gained remote access to refrigeration equipment and manipulated its temperature controls.
