Former Vice President Mike Pence—who famously failed in his own 2024 presidential bid—is once again taking aim at Donald Trump. On Sunday, Pence went on CNN and accused the President of being too soft on Russia while pressing him to impose harsher measures against Vladimir Putin.
“I know his style in dealing with these dictators. It’s the velvet glove,” Pence told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I think the hammer needs to come, and it needs to come immediately.”
Pence’s sharp comments come just one day before President Trump is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a lineup of European leaders at the White House. The summit is expected to focus on possible steps toward ending the war in Ukraine.
This gathering follows Trump’s high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. Reports indicate that the two leaders reached a preliminary understanding aimed at securing peace—provided Ukraine and NATO agree to certain conditions.
