In 2008, California voters approved a referendum to allocate nearly $10 billion toward building a high-speed rail line connecting Los Angeles to San Francisco. The project was touted as a groundbreaking step forward for the state’s transportation future, but nearly two decades later, it remains nothing short of a colossal failure. Originally slated for completion by 2020 at an estimated cost of $33 billion, only a few dozen miles of track have been built so far, and the cost has ballooned to over $130 billion.
