Scientists have now confirmed that Vibrio vulnificus, often referred to as “flesh-eating bacteria,” has been detected in multiple waterways across the Hamptons, including Sagaponack Pond and Mecox Bay on Long Island’s South Fork. The findings were published by Stony Brook University researcher Christopher Gobler, raising fresh concerns about coastal exposure in high-traffic summer areas.

Sagaponack, in particular, is not just any location. It ranks among the most expensive zip codes in the United States, where multimillion-dollar homes line the shore and summer tourism surges every year.
