“Our parent company, Paramount, is trying to complete a merger. The Trump administration must approve it. Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways,” Pelley revealed to the audience.
While Pelley admitted that no stories have been officially blocked yet, he warned that Owens viewed the new “oversight” as a death sentence for the show’s editorial independence. “None of our stories has been blocked,” Pelley said. “But Bill felt he lost the independence that honest journalism requires. No one here is happy about it.”
Owens, a CBS veteran of decades, had made it his mission to protect the program’s credibility, even as it faced controversies around its reporting on the Trump White House, the Israel-Gaza war, and more. “Stories we’ve pursued for 57 years were often controversial, lately the Israel-Gaza war and the Trump administration. Bill made sure they were accurate and fair—he was tough that way,” Pelley added.

Sources say the pressure has been mounting ever since President Trump filed a $20 billion lawsuit against “60 Minutes,” accusing the show of editing an interview with Kamala Harris to portray her more favorably. That lawsuit is still hanging over Paramount as they attempt to seal a major merger deal with Skydance.
In his resignation letter, Owens didn’t mince words about why he was leaving: “It had become clear that I would not be allowed to run the show as I have always run it – to make independent decisions based on what was right for 60 Minutes, right for the audience.”
During a tearful private meeting with staff, Owens reportedly admitted, “It’s clear the company is done with me. It has to continue, just not with me as the executive producer.”

Pelley wasn’t the only one blasting management. Veteran correspondent Lesley Stahl also went public, telling Variety: “That is not the way that companies that own news organizations should be acting.” Stahl made it known that interference from Paramount was undermining the judgment of the newsroom, further deepening the crisis.
