President Donald Trump delivered an unexpected surprise to supporters at a rally in Syracuse, New York, on Friday night, bringing heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson into the spotlight during a campaign appearance for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman.
The moment offered a break from the political speeches and election arguments, as Trump reflected on his decades-long relationship with Tyson and recalled the boxer’s fearsome reputation during his championship years.
Tyson, now 60, received an enthusiastic welcome as Trump introduced him to the crowd. The former heavyweight champion had spent part of the day at the White House before traveling with the president to upstate New York, making his appearance at the rally the culmination of an eventful afternoon.
The gathering was organized in support of Blakeman, the Republican challenging Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in November’s gubernatorial election.
