Think about that: a man on Australia’s Security Intelligence Organization watchlist legally owning multiple firearms while committing mass murder.
Australia’s so-called gun control “success” is far from it. After the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, Australia enacted sweeping gun legislation, including a mandatory buyback program requiring owners of semi-automatic and certain pump-action firearms to surrender their weapons.⁵ ⁶
Democrats, including Joe Biden and Barack Obama, have long hailed Australia as the gold standard for gun control. But the Bondi Beach massacre exposes a glaring flaw in that narrative: the terrorists obtained weapons legally, including a pump-action shotgun with an extended magazine.⁷
Video footage from the scene shows the attackers, dressed in black, firing from a footbridge at families attending the “Chanukah by the Sea” event.⁸ Eyewitnesses report the shooters yelled “Allahu Akbar” with every shot.⁹
Fifteen innocent people died, including a 10-year-old girl and Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman. More than 40 were injured, among them two police officers. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese eventually described it as “a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah.”¹⁰
The tragedy underscores a critical reality Omar refuses to acknowledge: strict gun laws left Jewish families defenseless. The only reason one shooter was stopped was thanks to unarmed heroism. Forty-three-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed wrestled a gun away from a terrorist, taking multiple shots in the process and requiring surgery.¹¹
U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) criticized Omar sharply on X, writing, “Australia already has some of the world’s most restrictive gun laws. Those laws didn’t prevent today’s shooting. They just left the (unarmed) victims completely defenseless. This couldn’t be more tone deaf.”¹²
Meanwhile, Omar and her fellow Democrats remain committed to gun confiscation ideology, ignoring what actually works. Authorities discovered two improvised explosive devices at the scene, and police confirmed the terrorists had undergone military-style training in the Philippines just weeks earlier.¹³ ¹⁴
Instead of reevaluating their approach, Australian leaders are doubling down. Prime Minister Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced plans for stricter gun laws.¹⁵ Minns questioned the necessity of firearms for ordinary citizens: “If you’re not a farmer, you’re not involved in agriculture, why do you need these massive weapons that put the public in danger?”¹⁶
Ilhan Omar, meanwhile, wants to bring this same failed system to America. The Bondi Beach massacre proves that gun control does not stop terrorists — it only disarms law-abiding citizens while extremists find ways to arm themselves.
For Democrats, confiscating guns has never been about safety; it has always been about control. The tragic events in Australia make that painfully clear.
