A stunning new book claims that former President Barack Obama had serious reservations about Kamala Harris’s ability to win against Donald Trump in 2024 and worked behind the scenes to push for an alternative nominee. The revelations come from FIGHT: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House, a book detailing the Democratic Party’s internal chaos after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.
According to the book, Obama was not convinced that Harris was the right candidate to lead the Democratic Party, despite ultimately endorsing her five days after Biden formally stepped aside. His concerns reportedly led him to advocate for a “mini-primary” within the party in an effort to find a stronger contender.

NBC political reporter Jonathan Allen, co-author of the book with The Hill’s senior correspondent Amie Parnes, discussed the findings on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, revealing, “So President Obama absolutely did not think that Joe Biden should continue, according to our sources close to President Obama. And he also didn’t want Kamala Harris to be the replacement for Biden. He didn’t think that she was the best choice for Democrats.”
