In yet another move sparking outrage, Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois—a liberal enclave just outside Chicago—is offering a spring semester course titled “Unsettling Whiteness.” Critics argue that this is yet another example of higher education institutions promoting divisive and anti-White narratives.
The course, listed under the Department of Black Studies, is described as an exploration of “the historical, political, and cultural formation of whiteness in Western modernity.” According to the university’s course catalog, the class aims to make whiteness “visible and narratable for commentary and analysis.”

While some claim the course seeks to provide critical analysis, others point out that American universities have long been saturated with discussions of race and whiteness. Many argue that such courses perpetuate stereotypes and label whiteness as inherently linked to supremacy and privilege.
