Dean Wells, a name etched in both NFL and college football history, has died at the age of 54 following a hard-fought battle with cancer. The former linebacker passed away on Thursday, leaving behind a legacy that spans nearly a decade in the National Football League and a record-setting collegiate career with the University of Kentucky.
Wells fought valiantly against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a fast-moving cancer of the blood and bone marrow. His diagnosis came in 2022, and he opened up about his health battle during a candid interview in April 2023. Speaking to On3.com, Wells shared what it took to keep pushing through such a brutal disease.

“There’s mental toughness that comes into it. You have to have a positive attitude that you can beat it. I’ve done everything that I can with that. It’s like the chemo either works or it doesn’t. You just don’t have a lot of control over it. You wish you had more control,” Wells said.
The Mayo Clinic describes ALL as a form of leukemia that develops rapidly, replacing healthy blood cells with immature ones. Despite every effort to beat the disease, Wells ultimately lost the battle after a two-year fight.
