Barred by term limits from running for a third term, Newsom will leave the governor’s mansion next year. But instead of focusing on California’s mounting crises — rampant homelessness, rising crime, and sky-high taxes — he’s positioning himself as the next face of the Democratic Party. Pollsters have consistently listed him among the top contenders for 2028, despite his deep unpopularity at home.
When pressed by CBS about whether he’ll officially jump into the race, Newsom dodged, saying: “Fate will determine that.”
This isn’t the first time Newsom has been rumored to have presidential ambitions. In 2024, he was widely speculated to challenge Joe Biden for the nomination but ultimately threw his support behind the president. Still, his national appearances and cable interviews haven’t gone unnoticed.
“I have no idea,” he told The Post when asked about his 2028 plans, even poking fun at his academic record. “The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, that still struggles to read scripts, that was always in the back of the classroom, the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary.”
But his comments also hinted at uncertainty. “Who the hell knows? I’m looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that’s the question for the American people,” he added.
Newsom won’t have the stage to himself. Vice President Kamala Harris has already hinted at her own plans to run, telling the BBC, “I am not done.” If both jump into the race, it would pit two of California’s most controversial Democrats against each other — a showdown that could split the party’s progressive base.
In the meantime, Newsom has continued to use his national platform to attack former President Donald Trump and the GOP. He’s accused Republicans of “authoritarian” behavior and warned that the U.S. might not even have a presidential election in 2028 if Trump and his supporters aren’t stopped.
“I fear that we will not have an election in 2028. I really mean that in the core of my soul − unless we wake up to the code red, what’s happening in this country, and we wake up soberly to how serious this moment is,” Newsom told The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert in September.
Critics say Newsom’s rhetoric is nothing more than an effort to distract from California’s failures. His latest move — signing a bizarre law banning law enforcement from wearing masks during official duties — sparked backlash from police groups who say it makes their jobs more dangerous.
“I mean if some guy jumped out of an unmarked car and a van with a mask on and tried to grab me. I mean by definition, you’re going to push back,” Newsom said. “And so these are not just authoritarian tendencies. These are authoritarian actions by an authoritarian government.”
But border enforcement officials are pushing back, saying Newsom’s accusations are absurd. Former ICE Director Tom Homan and others have repeatedly explained that agents don’t “randomly target” individuals — they go after illegal immigrants with criminal records or deportation orders. Officials have also warned that inflammatory political attacks like Newsom’s have fueled a 1,000 percent spike in violence against immigration agents nationwide.
As Newsom gears up for a possible 2028 run, his critics see a governor more focused on his political image than his collapsing state. California is facing record deficits, failing schools, and cities overrun with drugs and crime — yet its leader is busy practicing debate lines for a presidential campaign.
The bigger question isn’t whether Gavin Newsom will run. It’s whether voters will ever forget what he’s already done to California.

No sane person would look at the damage Newsom has brought to California and keep him in office. He has destroyed the working and middle class with his taxes! He has forced corporations out of California because of his taxes! He loves criminals and makes victims seem like it’s their own fault for getting robbed, raped, or killed!
