California Governor Gavin Newsom came unglued Thursday night after a federal judge — conveniently appointed by Bill Clinton — granted him a temporary restraining order blocking President Trump from taking control of the California National Guard amid spiraling chaos in Los Angeles.
U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, brother of former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, declared Trump’s move to federalize the National Guard as “illegal,” delivering a massive political win for Newsom, who used the ruling as an excuse to gloat in front of the press.
In a press conference that quickly turned into a finger-wagging tirade, Newsom praised the restraining order while deflecting questions about his own failures to control the lawless mayhem engulfing his state.
But things took a bizarre turn when a reporter pressed Newsom about his conversation with President Trump.
At first, the California governor denied any communication took place — “Trump never called,” he claimed.
