In a surprising turn of events, the U.S. Navy has dismissed Captain Michel Brandt, the commander of the amphibious transport dock USS Somerset, just shy of a year after she assumed command. The decision was announced in a recent statement by the Navy Times, citing a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead” as the primary reason for her removal.
The statement issued on Thursday by Rear Adm. Christopher Stone, Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 7 (ESG 7), did not elaborate on the specifics behind the loss of confidence. It simply stated, “Rear Adm. Christopher Stone, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 7 (ESG 7), relieved Capt. Michel Brandt as commanding officer of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS Somerset (LPD 25), June 6, 2024, due to loss of confidence in her ability to lead the crew.”
