“These sanctuary city politicians, whether it be JB Pritzker, Gov. Murphy, Karen Bass, or Gavin Newsom, they have blood on their hands,” McLaughlin declared.
This wasn’t a throwaway soundbite. McLaughlin backed up her accusation with a tragic example from New Jersey that Democrats can’t escape.
A Preventable Tragedy
McLaughlin pointed to the shocking case of Raul Luna-Perez, an illegal alien with a long history of criminal behavior.
Just weeks ago, Luna-Perez killed 11-year-old Dayanara Cortes and her mother, Maria Pleitez, in a horrific drunk driving crash. The outrage? He had already been arrested twice for DUIs this year and previously for domestic violence.
“If it weren’t for these sanctuary city policies, this young woman, this child, and her mother would be alive today,” McLaughlin stated.
New Jersey officials let him slip through the cracks again and again. In any other jurisdiction, he would have been deported after the first arrest. Instead, sanctuary city protections kept putting him back on the streets — until two innocent lives were stolen.
The Revolving Door of Injustice
McLaughlin explained how sanctuary policies turn law enforcement into a revolving door for dangerous criminals.
“Secretary [Kristi] Noem is absolutely right, we’ve been going after the worst of the worst, MS-13 gang members, child abusers, rapists, murderers, and we are lodging detainers in those detention facilities so that when these people are free, that way ICE can grab them and they can be deported,” McLaughlin said.
But sanctuary states deliberately block ICE from doing its job.
“Unfortunately, under [Illinois Governor] JB Pritzker’s leadership, these murderers, rapists and otherwise depraved individuals are going free and are being released onto Illinois streets, and they go on to commit those crimes again,” she continued. “It’s a revolving door of justice.”
That revolving door ended in bloodshed for the Pleitez family.
Democrats Scramble for Cover
McLaughlin’s charges forced New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy into damage control. His office released a carefully worded statement attempting to shift blame.
“Mr. Luna-Perez, who has been arrested multiple times for DUI and domestic violence, should not have been allowed behind the wheel and should have already been deported due to his previous dangerous criminal activity,” a Murphy spokesperson said.
But instead of deflecting, Murphy’s statement only confirmed McLaughlin’s argument: sanctuary policies kept a repeat offender in the country until it was too late.
McLaughlin fired back immediately: “Governor Murphy and his sanctuary policies released this serial criminal into New Jersey communities. Now, this innocent family is shattered by their failed leadership.”
Trump’s New Strategy Against Sanctuary Cities
McLaughlin also made clear this wasn’t just a one-off fight. The Trump administration is shifting to a new, aggressive strategy: tying specific politicians to specific tragedies.
“President Trump and Secretary Noem will continue to do everything in their power to remove these criminal illegal aliens before they destroy more lives,” McLaughlin vowed.
Instead of abstract policy debates, the administration is forcing Democrats to defend the indefensible: families torn apart by crimes that never should have happened.
The message is direct: every sanctuary city death has a name, a face, and a politician who could have prevented it.
Democrats Cornered
By naming Pritzker, Murphy, Bass, and Newsom outright, Trump officials are making sanctuary city Democrats own the consequences of their policies.
It’s a devastating strategy. Every time a preventable crime happens, Democrats are going to be asked why they continue protecting illegal aliens over American citizens.
McLaughlin’s searing indictment sets the tone: sanctuary city leaders can either admit their policies failed, or keep trying to explain away the blood on their hands.
Either way, the Trump administration just changed the battlefield.
