In a separate but eerily similar attack just 90 minutes earlier, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were ambushed in their Champlin residence roughly five miles away. Both were shot and are currently recovering after emergency surgery.
Governor Tim Walz did not mince words, declaring the back-to-back shootings to be “politically motivated.”
Suspect Posed as a Police Officer to Gain Access
The gunman reportedly wore a full police uniform—complete with vest, badge, and Taser—to deceive the lawmakers into opening their doors.
“This is someone that clearly had been impersonating a police officer who uses the trust of this badge and this uniform to manipulate their way into the home,” Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley confirmed at a Saturday press briefing.
After briefly exchanging gunfire with officers inside the Hortman residence, the suspect fled the scene. A manhunt is underway, and a three-mile lockdown has been issued around the crime site. The FBI has since joined local authorities in the pursuit.
A Hit List and a Manifesto Found in Suspect’s Car
If the gunman’s outfit wasn’t unsettling enough, the contents of his vehicle paint a darker picture.
Police uncovered a manifesto—along with what they described as “a list of other possible targets.” Authorities have not released the names of those on the list nor the full contents of the manifesto, but confirmed its existence during Saturday’s press conference.
The exact motive remains unclear, but the recent actions of Hortman may have put a target on her back.
Hortman Voted Against Her Party Just Days Before Attack
Only five days before the shooting, Melissa Hortman made a bold move: she voted with Republicans to strip state-funded healthcare benefits from illegal immigrants—a fiercely contested issue in Minnesota’s legislature.
Her vote gave the GOP the margin it needed to pass the repeal of MinnesotaCare coverage for non-citizens. According to reports, she was emotional after casting her ballot, having sided with Republicans against the majority of her Democrat colleagues.
While no official motive has been confirmed, the timing of the attack raises unsettling questions.
Democrat Defector Painted as Target for Far-Left Fury
Hortman had been a reliable supporter of progressive policies throughout her career, from abortion to transgender rights. But her sudden break with party orthodoxy—especially on immigration—may have drawn the ire of radical elements within the political landscape.
Her decision ultimately cost her everything.
The lawmaker leaves behind two children and a stunned political community.
Senator Hoffman, who did not vote with Republicans on the immigration measure, is expected to recover. It’s unclear why he was also targeted in the coordinated attack.
Political Violence Escalates as Americans Grapple with Division
The shootings serve as a grim reminder that political differences are no longer confined to debates and protests—they’re spilling into violence, even murder.
The suspect’s use of deception, the targeting of elected officials, and the detailed planning evident in the manifesto all point toward a premeditated effort to intimidate or punish lawmakers for their political stances.
The democratic system relies on the ability of legislators to vote freely and safely. When bullets replace ballots, the entire system begins to collapse.
This act of terror has left a family shattered, a state in mourning, and a nation on edge.
If elected officials can’t even survive casting a vote, what does that say about the current state of American politics?
One thing is clear: political violence is no longer hypothetical. It’s here. And it must be stopped—before even more lives are lost.
