The CR, which temporarily avoided a government shutdown, has left Johnson exposed to criticism within his party, reigniting doubts about his grip on the Speaker’s gavel.
Johnson’s actions have drawn fire from conservatives who accuse him of repeatedly caving to Democratic demands. Notably, he scrapped the SAVE Act, which would have mandated proof of citizenship for voter registration, approved funding for Ukraine, and supported other initiatives seen as counter to conservative principles.

In May 2024, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion to vacate Johnson’s speakership, citing frustration with his willingness to collaborate with Democrats on spending bills. In response, Democratic leaders, including Jeffries, moved to table Greene’s motion, securing 163 Democratic and 196 Republican votes to keep Johnson in power. This maneuver was part of a broader agreement tied to Ukraine aid, temporarily stabilizing Johnson’s position.
