Former First Lady Michelle Obama is once again facing criticism after remarks about shopping choices reignited long running debates over race, bias, and selective outrage in American politics.

For years, conservatives have accused Obama of framing everyday life through a racial lens. This time, critics say the evidence came straight from her own mouth and on camera.

During a recent discussion attended exclusively by black women, Obama spoke openly about how race factors into her fashion purchases. According to the viral clip, she explained that when she discovers designers she likes, she makes a conscious effort to support them if they are people of color.
“If I hear of someone whose fashion I like, and I hear they’re a person of color, I try to make it a point”
