Of course, Barron’s college experience can never be completely normal.
Secret Service protection follows him, and security considerations inevitably complicate everyday activities that other students take for granted.
But the younger Trump appears determined to carve out some privacy anyway.
Reports have indicated that he does not freely distribute his personal phone number to classmates and instead communicates with friends through Discord.
It is an unusual arrangement for an unusual student.
Yet it also suggests Barron has figured out how to maintain friendships while protecting himself from the inevitable attention attached to the Trump name.
Barron Reportedly Has a Girlfriend
His romantic life may be an even better example.
Hello! Magazine recently reported that Barron has been dating a woman he met through NYU and that the relationship has remained largely outside public view.
That is particularly interesting considering what President Donald Trump said about his son’s dating life during a 2024 appearance on the PBD Podcast.
Asked whether Barron had a girlfriend, Trump suggested he did not know whether his son had reached that stage yet.
Meanwhile, reports from Barron’s freshman year portrayed him as popular with female students while remaining intensely private.
Apparently, that privacy strategy worked.
Despite being the son of one of the most recognizable political figures on the planet, Barron has managed to keep significant portions of his personal life away from both the political press and celebrity media.
That may be an accomplishment by itself.
He Is Also Testing the Business World
Barron apparently isn’t limiting himself to classes and campus life.
He has also reportedly become involved with SOLLOS, a beverage venture launched with friends in Florida.
Once again, his approach appears remarkably understated for a member of the Trump family.
There have been no major publicity tours built around Barron.
No constant television appearances.
No flood of promotional posts bearing his name.
Instead, reports indicate that he has preferred to operate largely behind the scenes.
For a young man whose family name is synonymous with branding, skyscrapers, television and politics, the decision to maintain such a low profile stands out.
Barron may have inherited the entrepreneurial instinct.
He certainly has not inherited his father’s appetite for publicity — at least not yet.
Melania’s Own Words Reveal the Change
Perhaps the clearest evidence that Barron is becoming increasingly independent came from his mother.
During a September 23 appearance on Fox Business’ “The Big Money Show,” host Taylor Riggs asked Melania about balancing professional obligations with family traditions.
Melania acknowledged that family time was becoming “less and less” and was “suffering because of it.”
But her observation about Barron was particularly revealing.
She said her son was “maybe even happy” that she had become so occupied with her own projects.
That comment presents a very different family dynamic from the one Melania described earlier in the year.
In January, while discussing motherhood with Fox Business, Melania said someone Barron’s age “needed a parent there nonstop.”
That protective instinct was hardly surprising.
Barron grew up under conditions few American children could imagine.
His father became president when Barron was still a child. His family’s movements were scrutinized constantly. Cameras followed them from New York to Washington to Florida and back again.
Melania frequently made clear that protecting her son was one of her highest priorities.
But children eventually become adults — even children raised inside Trump Tower and the White House.

That may ultimately be the most interesting part of Barron’s story.
He has every opportunity to become a celebrity simply by showing up.
He could build enormous social-media accounts overnight.
He could sit for interviews, appear on television or turn his surname into instant publicity for virtually any venture he chooses.
So far, he has largely done the opposite.
Barron has kept his relationships private.
He has kept his business activities relatively quiet.
He has adapted to college while dealing with security restrictions no ordinary student faces.
And increasingly, he looks less like a presidential child being escorted through history and more like a young man figuring out what he wants his own life to become.
Melania’s changing comments may therefore be less contradictory than they initially appear.
At the beginning of the year, she was describing the instinct of a mother determined to remain available to her son.
By September, she was confronting the result every successful parent eventually faces: the child begins needing that protection less.
Barron Trump is now 20 years old.
He has college, friends, a reported relationship and business interests of his own.
And despite carrying one of the most recognizable surnames in America, he appears to be building that life with surprisingly little noise.
For Melania, watching him become independent may require an adjustment.
For Barron, independence appears to have been the plan all along.
