Swit stepped into the role of Major Houlihan after Sally Kellerman played the part in the original 1970 MASH* film. But what she did with the character was revolutionary. In the show’s early days, Houlihan was portrayed as a strict, often disliked officer. But as the series matured, so did her role. Swit fought to evolve her character into a strong, multifaceted woman.

“She was [unique] at the time and in her time, which was the ’50s, when [the Korean War] was happening. And she became even more unique, I think, because we allowed her to continue to grow — we watched her evolve. I don’t think that’s ever been done in quite that way,” Swit once said in a 2004 interview for The Interviews: An Oral History of Television.

Her push for character development helped turn Houlihan into a figure of resilience and emotional depth. And audiences noticed. Swit earned Emmy nominations every year from 1974 to 1983, taking home wins in 1980 and 1982.

She appeared in 240 out of 251 episodes, one of only two cast members to bookend the show from pilot to finale — the other being Alan Alda. The emotional farewell scene between Houlihan and Hawkeye in the final episode included a 35-second kiss that has since been dubbed “the most expensive kiss in TV history” due to the advertising revenue during that broadcast.

One unforgettable scene came in the episode The Nurses, where her character breaks down and reveals how she’d always felt isolated from the very people she led. “She reveals to them why she’s always been so tough on them, delivering a speech that’s both powerful and heartbreaking,” one fan said.

Loretta Swit’s impact went far beyond entertainment. Born Loretta Jane Szwed to Polish immigrants in Passaic, New Jersey, she began performing at just seven years old. Her parents didn’t support her dream of acting, but she pursued it with passion, eventually landing roles on shows like Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, and Hawaii Five-O before MASH* changed her life.

After the show ended, she was the first cast member to travel to Korea and hosted Korean War — The Untold Story, a documentary that paid tribute to the war’s real-life heroes.

But her most lasting post-MASH* contribution may have been in the world of animal welfare. Swit was a fierce advocate, serving on the boards of several organizations and even founding her own nonprofit, the SwitHeart Animal Alliance. She often auctioned her own paintings to raise money for animals in need.

Swit once reflected on the show’s enduring power by recalling a message from a fan: “Dear MAS*H folk: You made me laugh. You made me cry. You made me feel. Thank you.” She responded simply, “I’ve never forgotten that. That’s one hell of a legacy.”

She also shared a special connection with her co-stars, especially Harry Morgan (Colonel Potter), who became her neighbor until his passing in 2011. She remained close with Alan Alda and his family as well.

Loretta Swit was married to fellow actor Dennis Holahan from 1983 to 1995, whom she met on the set of MASH*. Though they parted ways, her love for family and community never faded.

With her passing, America says farewell to not just a star — but to an era. Swit’s portrayal of Major Houlihan broke stereotypes, uplifted women’s roles in media, and offered comfort during some of the most uncertain times in our country’s history.

As the nation mourns her loss, one truth remains: Loretta Swit was more than a TV character. She was a symbol of strength, heart, and transformation — both onscreen and off.
