Hollywood stars seem unable to resist injecting their political views into pop culture, and audiences are growing weary of it. Now, a major Marvel star has ignited controversy with his take on Captain America and what the character represents.

Captain America: Brave New World, the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is set to premiere on February 14. The film sees Anthony Mackie reprise his role as Sam Wilson, who officially took over as Captain America after Steve Rogers passed down the shield in Avengers: Endgame.

The decision to make Wilson the new Captain America follows a trend Marvel has pushed in recent years, replacing beloved legacy characters with so-called “diverse” versions. In 2014, Marvel replaced classic superheroes like Wolverine, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain America with female and minority counterparts in what many saw as a blatant effort to inject woke messaging into the comic book industry. Fans rejected these changes, and sales tanked, forcing Marvel to revert to the original characters.
