Rubio Ends the Calibri Era and Orders Diplomats Back to Serious Fonts
Secretary of State Marco Rubio shocked Washington this week when he issued an official “Action Request” memo ordering all U.S. diplomats across the globe to immediately stop using Calibri in government communications.¹ The soft, Microsoft default typeface that arrived during the Biden era is now gone.
Rubio framed the State Department’s 2023 switch to Calibri as yet another symbolic DEI project that wasted money, undermined professionalism and offered no measurable value. In the memo, Rubio reminded staff that “Typography shapes how official documents are perceived in terms of cohesion, professionalism and formality.”²
