New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing renewed criticism over whom he chose to publicly mourn after a man charged in the killing of an autistic Bronx resident died while in city custody.
Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, 20, died September 16 after experiencing medical distress following a court appearance in Queens. New York City’s Department of Correction said officers performed CPR before emergency personnel transported him to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
But Castillo was not simply another anonymous inmate.
