New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday that his administration intends to launch five city-owned grocery stores—one in each of the city’s five boroughs—as part of a broader effort to lower food costs for residents.
The proposal, which was a key promise during Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, would dedicate $70 million in capital funding to establish the stores. Under the plan, the city would provide the locations and cover major upfront expenses, including construction, renovations, rent, and property taxes.
City officials say shoppers will find a selection of commonly purchased grocery items priced up to 30% below typical retail rates. The discounted basket would include fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, seafood, dairy products, eggs, milk, bread, cheese, rice, beans, and roughly 20 pantry staples. According to the administration, prices for these essential products would be updated monthly and remain fixed at the discounted rate.
