New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani — a self-proclaimed socialist and outspoken defender of radical leftist policies — is facing a major credibility crisis after being caught fabricating a dramatic story about his so-called “aunt” and supposed post-9/11 “Islamophobic abuse.”
The scandal erupted after Mamdani, who has openly aligned himself with far-left movements and pro-Palestinian activists, tried to portray himself as a victim of bigotry during a campaign stop at an Islamic center in the Bronx last week.
Standing before cameras and supporters, Mamdani gave an emotional speech in which he invoked his “aunt’s” alleged suffering after the 9/11 terror attacks.
“I want to speak to the memory of my aunt, who stopped taking the subway after September 11th because she did not feel safe in her hijab,” Mamdani said, his voice cracking as he appeared to fight back tears during his remarks at the Islamic Cultural Center in the Bronx.
