New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani wasted no time igniting a political firestorm. Over the weekend, he posted a jaw-dropping video instructing illegal migrants on ways to sidestep, stonewall, and outright obstruct federal immigration officers. The message, which surfaced on his X account Sunday, wasn’t subtle. Rather than calling for cooperation with law enforcement, Mamdani offered what many critics say amounts to a survival guide for avoiding ICE in the nation’s largest city.
The video was released just days after a major ICE operation in Manhattan’s historic Chinatown, where federal agents attempted to detain several individuals near Canal Street. In response, Mamdani published a tutorial titled, “Protect Your Rights: What to Do When Encountering ICE in NYC.” The production wasn’t simply a reminder about civil liberties—it detailed a step-by-step plan to help illegal immigrants prevent federal officers from carrying out their duties.
Mamdani opened the video by warning viewers about letting authorities enter any private space. He stated: “ICE cannot enter into private spaces like your home, school, or private area of your workplace without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.” To drive his point home, he flashed an image of an approved judicial warrant while comparing it to the administrative notices immigration officers often carry—documents that do not require a judge’s signature.
